Silent E Words: Patterns, Examples and Exceptions

A final silent E often changes the way an earlier vowel is read, but that is only part of the story. It can also support a soft C or G, prevent an English word from ending in V, or distinguish one spelling from another. The reviewed examples below show the patterns without pretending the rule has no exceptions.

What final silent E can do

In many short words, a vowel–consonant–E pattern changes the first vowel from its common short sound to a long sound: compare cap with cape or kit with kite. Teachers often call this “silent E” or “magic E.” It is a useful reading pattern, not a universal law.

Final E has other spelling jobs. It can keep C soft in race, keep G soft in change, and follow the convention that ordinary English words do not end with the letter V, as in twelve. It can also help distinguish a spelling such as bye from by.

Words such as have, give, and come are important counterexamples: their final E is silent, but the earlier vowel does not take the expected long sound. Readers still need to learn these frequent spellings as exceptions.
