Add at least one word constraint.

Build a precise word search

Start with one constraint, then narrow the list. Every active field is applied together, so a crossword clue, a Wordle guess, or a rack of letters can be described in one search.

Known positions

Type a Pattern such as _o_e__er, with _ or ? for each unknown letter, or combine Starts with and Ends with to fix both edges.

Required letters

Includes letters finds words containing every letter in any order. Contains keeps a sequence together, and Excludes removes words with unwanted letters.

Letters you have

Only use these letters builds words from a set such as l i n g a r y. Add a length or an ending to narrow the list.

How to use the Word Finder

The finder is the main product: combine constraints directly instead of opening a separate landing page for every possible pattern. If your letters are scrambled instead of positioned, the Unscramble tool finds every word you can build from a set of letters.

  1. 1Choose Common for the cleanest everyday vocabulary, Extended for broader coverage, or Word-game for rare entries.
  2. 2Add any combination of starting or ending letters, exact length, a pattern of known positions, letters in any order, letters to use, required text, and excluded letters.
  3. 3Run the search. Wordsy reports the exact match count and groups displayed results by length.
  4. 4Copy a result group, share the filtered URL, or refine the pattern without sending your query to a server.

Word Finder FAQ

How do I find words with specific letters?

Enter the letters in Includes letters to require them anywhere in the word, in any order. Use Contains when the letters must appear together in sequence, and Starts with or Ends with for the edges of the word.

How do I find a word when I know some letter positions?

Type a Pattern with _ or ? for each unknown letter. For an 8-letter word whose second letter is O, fourth letter is E, and ending is ER, enter _o_e__er. The pattern sets the word length for you.

How do I find words using only certain letters?

Enter your letters in Only use these letters, such as lingary. Each letter can be used as many times as you list it. Add an exact length or an ending to narrow the list, or use the Unscramble tool to see every word from the same letters grouped by length.

Can I use the Word Finder for Wordle-style clues?

Yes. Choose 5 letters, put confirmed letters in the Pattern (for example __a_e), add letters you know are in the word to Includes letters, and add ruled-out letters to Excludes letters.

How do I find words of a certain length?

Choose an exact length from 2 to 15 in the finder. You can use length alone or combine it with any other pattern field.

How do I find words that start and end with specific letters?

Enter both constraints in the finder, such as S in Starts with and R in Ends with. Both constraints are applied to the same private, in-browser search.

Does Word-game mode certify words for Scrabble?

No. Word-game mode is a broad SCOWL size-80 vocabulary layer with many rare words. It is not an official Scrabble, Words With Friends, or other commercial-game lexicon, so check the dictionary used by your game.

How big is the dictionary and where does it come from?

Wordsy builds Common, Extended, and Word-game American English layers from the open-source SCOWL/ESDB project. The layers correspond to SCOWL sizes 60, 70, and 80 and are filtered for abbreviations, special categories, profanity, character set, and word length.
